Unveiling the hidden gems of Taita Taveta.

A Remarkable Journey with Afrika Lodges

In the realm of adventure travel in Kenya, the desire to explore new places often leads us to meticulously plan and make countless phone calls. However, sometimes, our travel aspirations remain unfulfilled. Yet, on other occasions, it feels as though the stars align, and our wishes come true through unexpected encounters. Thanks to my yearning to discover the unique sites of Taita Taveta County, I had the pleasure of crossing paths with Mr. Wahome, the Director of Afrika Lodges Voi.

Savoring Exceptional Wines from Around the Globe at Cellars Grill Ngong RD, in Nairobi, where Mr. Wahome has displayed his impeccable collection for all to enjoy.

This fortuitous encounter led to a remarkable excursion that he graciously invited us and a select group of tour operators to join. Little did we know what Mr. Wahome and his co-host, Voi Adventures, had in store for us. Their passion for uncovering hidden gems off the beaten path was infectious and added an element of surprise and excitement to our journey. Our adventure began with an evening train ride from Nairobi, arriving at the Voi Railway Station at 18:48. The captivating views of Voi town’s twinkling lights against the backdrop of the expansive starry sky welcomed us to this enchanting destination. The strategically located Voi Railway Station offered a 360-degree panorama of Voi’s scenic beauty, setting the stage for our adventure.

The Afrika Lodge Hotel, a budget-friendly establishment situated on the Voi-Mombasa route just before the Taita-Taveta Junction, became our comfortable haven. With 39 well-maintained and elegantly designed rooms catering to various preferences, we found our accommodations to be exceptionally clean and spacious. The service was impeccable, and the culinary delights were a highlight of our stay. Notably, their mouthwatering pork ribs and extensive wine selection left a lasting impression.

During our stay, we embarked on a journey of exploration that encompassed several captivating areas:

  1. Tsavo National Park: We delved into the wilderness of Tsavo, where we had the privilege of witnessing the region’s abundant wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.
  2. Bura Mission Pilgrimage Site: We uncovered the historical significance of Bura Mission, a Catholic church that dates back to 1896, and learned about the challenges and triumphs of its early founders.
  3. Battlefields of Taita Hills: We traced the footsteps of history at Mwashoti, Maktau Indian Cemetery, and the Sniper tree, and explored the remnants of battlefields and the stories they hold.

4. Ngangao Forest: Our adventure took us deep into the heart of Ngangao Forest, a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers.

5. Heritage and Cultural Experiences: We immersed ourselves in the rich cultural heritage of Taita Taveta County, uncovering the stories and traditions that shape its identity. we had the honor of experiencing Mwazindika dance. The Mwazindika dance is a traditional Taita ritual that celebrates life and rids individuals, especially women, of evil spirits. During the dance, performers reenact the healing process by pouring water on the possessed. The climax, called “benzi,” showcases the drummers, particularly the master drummers known as “shimba mbaa” players. This dance is a cultural staple at public events in Taita, always met with excitement and joy. It’s an energetic and captivating performance.

6. Kenyatta Caves: The Kenyatta Caves, also known as the Kitobo Caves, are limestone caves located in Taita Taveta County, Kenya. These caves are known for their stunning geological formations, including stalactites and stalagmites. They hold cultural significance to the local Taita community and are believed to have served as a hiding place during times of conflict. Additionally, the caves have historical ties to Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s first President. Visitors can explore the caves with guided tours, experiencing both their natural beauty and cultural heritage.

In conclusion, our adventure travel in Kenya led us to the hidden treasures of Taita Taveta County, where our desires and curiosity were met with remarkable experiences. From wildlife safaris to historical pilgrimages and cultural immersion, this journey left an indelible mark on our hearts, reminding us of the boundless wonders that Kenya has to offer to adventurous travelers.
