Explore tiaty

An invitation to #exploretiaty by my fellow #DestinationHunters group was a delightful surprise that exceeded all my expectations.

For the longest time, the name Pokot was unfortunately associated with security concerns, but that perception has undergone a remarkable transformation. Our hub of exploration was at Korongoro Hotel. This Hotel is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rift Valley, with panoramic views of rolling hills above and beyond. It is a true gem in the heart of East Pokot. This exquisite hotel offers a unique blend of comfort, culture, and adventure, making it a sought-after destination for travelers seeking an authentic Kenyan experience. Through their unwavering dedication, they have consistently welcomed travelers, facilitating their exploration of this intriguing corner of East Pokot. I am confident that, like us, those who have experienced East Pokot with Korongoro Hotel have departed with an entirely different perspective of this breathtaking destination than when they first arrived.

What sets Korongoro Hotel apart is its commitment to showcasing the rich culture and traditions of the local Pokot community, reflecting the heritage and artistry of the region. The surrounding region offers a plethora of outdoor activities, including hiking, birdwatching, and wildlife safaris. Explore the breathtaking landscapes, encounter unique flora and fauna, and immerse yourself in the wonders of the Rift Valley.

During our visit, we had the pleasure of indulging in the following experiences that are accessible from the hotel.

Cultural Experiences: Tiaty is inhabited by various ethnic groups, such as the Pokot and Ilchamus. Visitors can engage in cultural experiences, including traditional dances and learning about indigenous lifestyles. We interacted with the famous Chemsik Dancers. This Pokot dancing group has entertained world-famous personalities like Madonna and Lewis Hamilton. They are celebrated for their mesmerizing performances that offer a glimpse into the rich traditions and vibrant culture of the Pokot people through dance and adornment

Scenic Landscapes: The region offers stunning landscapes, including hills and valleys, which provide excellent hiking and photography opportunities.

A|Silali Crater, located to the north of Lake Baringo, near Kapedo town, and south of Suguta Valley, is believed to be a potential impact crater from extraterrestrial origins. This basin was formed by a volcano that erupted approximately 400,000 to 220,000 years ago and remained active as recently as 7,000 years ago. Remarkably, it stands as the largest caldera volcano within the Gregory Rift Valley, boasting an impressive elevation of 5013 feet (1528 meters) above sea level. The views from this elevation can’t be expressed by mere words, they are breathtaking making it a truly captivating natural wonder.

B| #LochogeGorge offers a mesmerizing tapestry of nature’s artistry. Its breathtaking scenery unfolds as a testament to the Earth’s geological wonders, with rocky formations creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape. Every visit to Lochoge Gorge promises an encounter with the raw beauty of nature at its finest

C|The Kamrio Escarpment in Tiaty, Kenya, is a stunning geological formation characterized by rugged cliffs and dramatic landscapes. This natural wonder offers breathtaking panoramic views and is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers seeking awe-inspiring vistas.

Hot Springs: The region has natural hot springs like the Chemurkeu Hot Springs, where you can relax and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the warm mineral waters.

Rock Art and Caves: Explore the ancient rock art sites in the area, which provide insight into the region’s history and culture. We explored the #LomechanCaves, located within the Mt. Silali Basin, which comprises three distinct segments of lava caves. These fascinating natural formations are estimated to span a length of approximately 5 kilometers. Upon entering from the Reres segment, we encountered a powerful scent, signifying the presence of a thriving bat colony, estimated to number over 100,000. Furthermore, the other segments of the cave complex are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including porcupines, wasps, hyenas, and various other animals

Lake Baringo: This freshwater lake is a haven for birdwatchers and boat enthusiasts. You can spot various bird species and take boat trips to explore the lake’s islands.

While in Chemolingot town you can also explore Kapedo Waterfalls in #TurkanaCounty which is not very far. Kapedo Waterfalls in Kenya is indeed known for its hot water, and this unique characteristic can be attributed to the presence of geothermal springs in the region. Visitors to Kapedo Waterfalls are not only treated to the sight of a beautiful waterfall but also the rare experience of hot water flowing through the natural landscape, adding to the site’s uniqueness and appeal.

When venturing into this captivating region, it’s advisable to opt for a four-wheel-drive vehicle to navigate the diverse and sometimes very dusty terrain. Additionally, it’s essential to exercise a degree of decorum and show respect to the local host communities. Building positive relationships and honoring the customs and traditions of these communities not only enhances the travel experience but also fosters cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Remember to check local guidelines and regulations before visiting, and consider hiring a local guide for a more enriching experience in this region.
