A stop-over night in Eldoret saw us visit one of #TheHiddenGemsOfKenya. The mighty thrilling Chepkiit water falls in Nandi county or as they call it ‘the source of the champions.
It was an honour that we were received and guided by the cec tourism it doesn,t happen everyday .
This falls also Knowns as Mlango water falls are off Eldoret-Kapsabet road. Majestically located 26km from Eldoret town. Since we were short on time we decided to drive there waah -let me tell you maina!. It had rained heavily the previous night , the skidding we did , it was thrilling but chilling for like two minutes .
Scream Team lol!
I am sure we screamed our lungs out but the moment we got to the falls we forgot all about it. You see, Sosian river was mighty and the falls were mightier! Just like the meaning of the word chepkiit, the falls view was from above . We could only peep.. and the steep steps down were hair-raising.. The calmly flowing waters of Sosiani River are interrupted by the gushing sound made when it pours down a 70-metre cliff that separates the flat land from the rocky escarpment and disappears through the rocks before exiting on the other side.
I had not drawn my will yet, so there was no way I was gonna go down those stairs the falls were kind of hypnotizing. I haven’t finished my earth race yet …. You feel me?
According to the local guide he told us that Very old men who had lost hope in life would gather here, hold hands and sing their last songs before they could jump into the fall and die because they never wanted to be a burden to their kinsmen. This ritual is called sheu and associated with the Kalenjin community but not anymore.
The Local government is trying to change the narrative of this place and are creating a recreational facility around it. Well next time you visit the source of the champions explore more.
